In spring of 2014 when I worked at Lowe’s Home Improvement, the assistant store manager who reigned over the gardening and seasonal departments and the nursery outside asked me to draw several characters having to do with grills & grill accessories. He envisioned creating a Dungeons & Dragons-like game with the characters on trading cards, and quizzes on different grill trivia at each morning meeting. The goal of the cards/game would be to educate employees in the relevant departments and the rest of the store on various aspects of selling grills and the like. The score would be kept (somehow… the manager hadn’t worked out all the details yet), and two teams would be playing, so I was also asked to draw two team captains, representing Gas Grills vs. Charcoal Grills.
